Marketing In 2023: Privacy Regulation Updates To Come

As we round the corner into 2023, we want to remind you about all the new privacy laws coming into effect next year. Beginning in January and continuing throughout 2023, we’re going to see new privacy frameworks in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, and Virginia, representing a monumental shift in U.S. privacy regulation that will affect virtually every business. These frameworks herald a move toward a more privacy-protective regime, similar to GDPR in Europe.

But the challenges aren’t just coming from these new laws. Regulators are also demonstrating their ability to drive enforcement of existing laws even as they prepare for new ones, as Sephora recently learned in a recent headline-grabbing CCPA enforcement action.

What does this mean for you? Simply put, if you’re collecting personal consumer information, engaging in targeted advertising, or you sell or share personal information for targeted advertising purposes, you’ve got new requirements to consider – and if you haven’t already started, you shouldn’t wait.

Josh Stevens explains the timeline of privacy regulation and what you can expect in the future.
