Congratulations to former Ohio Attorney General and M&S Of Counsel Attorney Betty Montgomery on being awarded the 2018 Nettie Cronise Lutes Award by the Ohio State Bar Association’s (OSBA) Women in the Profession Section! This prestigious award is presented to a woman lawyer who has improved the legal profession through her own high level of professionalism and commitment to opening doors for other women.
Nettie Cronise Lutes was the first woman admitted to practice law in Ohio, at a time when state law did not authorize women to belong to the bar, and most members of the Supreme Court of Ohio opposed the notion. Lutes personally took on the challenge of persuading the Court to give her the same opportunity to practice law as men.
Betty’s long and distinguished career also includes a number of “firsts,” including serving as Ohio’s first woman Attorney General and first woman Auditor of State. Early in her career, as Wood County Prosecuting Attorney, Betty was the only woman prosecuting attorney in the state. Betty has been steadfast in her commitment to advancing women in the legal profession; she regularly writes and presents to a wide range of audiences, sharing her experiences and helping guide other women at all stages of their careers.
The OSBA presented Betty with this award at its Council of Delegates meeting on April 27, 2018.
